Haiti 360, LLC: Providing Haiti with lasting infrastructure |
Site: Haiti
Sector: Infrastructure
Challenge: The 2010 earthquake in Haiti destroyed more than 4,000 schools, 180 government buildings and one out of ten homes in the capital city of Port au Prince. Much of the country needs not only to be rebuilt but to be rebuilt in a way that it is better able to withstand possible future quakes.
Solution: OPIC provided a $6 million loan to Haiti 360 to facilitate the start-up costs of two plants that produce high-quality concrete used to rebuild homes and other infrastructure.
Impact: In 2012, more than 500 homes were built with concrete from the new plants. Haiti 360 also supplied the concrete to extend an airport runway in Haiti’s second-largest city of Cap Haitien. The first large airplane to land on the new runway was an Air Force jet carrying Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, during a 2012 business and trade delegation.
Haiti 360 is also working with USAID to provide concrete for more affordable homes throughout the country. Haiti 360 has become the #1 concrete producer by volume in Haiti and plans to donate a percentage of its profits to local charities, including a local orphanage.
