Bugis Boat Builders, Today’s Photo!
2012 October 16
Congratulations to Jennifer Hayes, ‘hazy jenius’ on Flickr, for her featured photo! A girl plays alongside a boat construction site. From the photographer, “The Bugis people are famous for their boat building skills. There are always at least 5 big boats on the share in different stages of building.” August 10, 2012, West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia.

The Village of Wera lies on the northeast tip of Sumbawa island in Indonesia. These traditional “Phinisi” boats are hand built on the beach with traditional methods and materials… using no blueprints or calculations! The Bugis people who built the boats are well known for their maritime knowledge, boat building skills, and their pirating past.
