Fires, marked with red dots, burn across Zambia (center), the Democratic Republic of the Congo (top right), and Zimbabwe (bottom right) in Southern Africa. In addition to the fire markers, this false-color image shows more signs of fire activity. Deep red burn scars show where fires have recently cleared the land. Older burn scars have faded into a dark brown and tan as the land recovers. The burn scars contrast sharply with the surrounding vegetation, which appears bright green in this false-color image. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument on the Terra satellite captured this image on August 29, 2003.
