Congratulations to Flickr participant “Lake Houston” for their featured photo from State of the Environment!

This photo was taken on August 18, 2011 of Lake Houston’s shoreline in Houston, Texas.

In May and June of 1972, on assignment for Documerica, photographer Jim Olive captured dramatic images related to ecological issues and environmental struggles in the areas of Fort Smith, Arkansas as well as Galveston and Houston, Texas like this one below of an oil tank that was struck by lightning.

    When we had those draughts last year in Houston (and Texas in general), it was incredible to see the amount of stuff at the bottoms of all the lakes. But just look at all of those tires! Terrible.

    Hope we got them taken out of the lake!
