PEACHTREE CITY, GA — April 22, 2012 —  Antilles High School (AHS) has received word that one of its seniors placed third in the Regional Junior Science and Humanities Symposium (JSHS) held recently in Puerto Rico. AHS is in the New York/Virginia/Puerto Rico District of the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) Domestic Dependent Elementary and Secondary Schools (DDESS/DoDDS-Cuba).

Senior Joy Ortiz has earned an expense-paid trip to San Diego, Calif., to attend the 49th National Junior Science and Humanities Symposium. Ortiz will also receive a $1,000 scholarship which will be sent to the university of her choice. The trip is awarded to five finalists at each regional symposium. Ortiz will represent the New York/Virginia/Puerto Rico District where more than 400 students are expected to attend this program of educational and scientific exchange.

Ortiz’s project, titled, “Eco-home: A Design Toward a Sustainable Future,” is a topic that is very close to her heart. Following high school graduation, Ortiz will attend Cornell University’s College of Architecture, Art and Planning in Ithaca, N.Y. She is the daughter of Dr. Nilsa Ortiz, who is an educator in the DoDEA Puerto Rico schools.

Ortiz’s science teacher is Mrs. Iliada Sierra and the local coordinator for the JSHS program is Dr. Lydia De Jesus. De Jesus will accompany Ortiz to California.
