Students Win DoDDS Pacific Area Math Competition

February 27, 2004 — Individual and team winners have been determined as a result of the DoDDS Pacific MATHCOUNTS competition. The top individual was from Kadena Middle School, Kadena, Okinawa. A team of middle school Mathletes® from Yokota Middle School, Yokota, Japan won the Pacific Area MATHCOUNTS competition. The second place team is Seoul American Middle School from Seoul, Korea. These two teams and the top individual student will now advance to the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) State Competition, to be held on March 24, 2004.

The competition consists or three official rounds: Sprint with 30 problems, Target with 8 problems, and Team with 10 problems. A student from Seoul American Middle School won the Sprint Round; a student from Kadena Middle School won the Target Round; and Yokota Middle School won the Team Round.

Celebrating its 21st Anniversary, MATHCOUNTS is a nationwide math coaching and competition program designed to improve math skills among U.S. students. Over six million students across the U.S. have participated in the MATHCOUNTS program.

MATHCOUNTS’ Founding Sponsors are the CNA Foundation, the National Society of Professional Engineers and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. National Sponsors also include The Dow Chemical Company Foundation, General Motors Foundation, Lockheed Martin, National Aeronautics and Space Administration, NEC Foundation of America, Texas Instruments Incorporated and 3M Foundation.
