Critically Acclaimed Play Coming to Okinawa

February 18, 2004 — THE MEETING, winner of six NAACP Theater Awards and eight New York AUDELCO nominations, is coming to Okinawa. The critically acclaimed play, presented by the Pin Points Theatre Group, Washington, D. C., will have one showing at Keystone Theater, Kadena Air Base, Sunday, February 29, 2004, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Doors will open at 6:00 p.m. at no charge to the public.

The play is a powerful drama about the lives, philosophies and times of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X and their opposing approaches to reaching a shared goal of equality.

THE MEETING answers the question, “What would have happened if Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. and Minister Malcolm X had met before they were assassinated, just three years apart?” It is an emotional, humorous, and tension-filled confrontation that gives surprising information about the men and their times.

This exciting drama is being sponsored by the Department of Defense Education Activity and Department of Defense Dependents Schools Pacific in celebration of Black History Month and in conjunction with the Okinawa Branch 1149 of the NAACP; African American Cultural Association; 10th Area Support Group, Torii Station; and Kadena Air Base Black History Month Committee. Since 1980, Pin Points Theater has integrated academic subjects into theatrical formats. The play has been produced throughout Asia, Europe and the United States, and provides an opportunity to educate and entertain children and adults through the arts.
