 Download PDF Download  Mr. Daniel S. "Dan" Butler was appointed Deputy Assistant Commandant, Intelligence and Criminal Investigations/Deputy Director, Coast Guard Intelligence (CGI), on January 15, 2012.
CGI is responsible for providing intelligence and criminal investigative support to the United States Coast Guard.

Previously, Mr. Butler served as Director of the Coast Guard Investigative Service (CGIS) from February 14, 2011 to January 14, 2012. From February 2006 through February 2011 he served with the Office of the Director of National Intelligence as Chief, Open Source, Document and Media Exploitation (DOMEX) and Foreign Language Exploitation (FLEX) Group (OSDF Group); Assistant Deputy Director of National Intelligence for Open Source; and, Senior Advisor for Policy and Oversight (Open Source). The ODNI OSDF Group exercised oversight responsibility for the Intelligence Community's open source enterprise, DOMEX enterprise, and related FLEX activities. Mr. Butler provided guidance and oversight of three national centers – the DNI Open Source Center, the National Media Exploitation Center, and the National Virtual Translation Center. The three centers are responsible for activities in several locations around the United States and overseas.

Prior to joining ODNI, Mr. Butler completed 24 years of service on active duty and as a civilian in the Department of Defense as an intelligence officer, criminal investigator, and administrator. As an active duty naval officer, Mr. Butler served as the tactical airborne reconnaissance pod system (TARPS) intelligence officer in F-14 Fighter Squadron 102 embarked in the aircraft carrier USS America, serving two deployments to the Mediterranean and Northern Arabian Seas. His subsequent active duty assignments included duty at the Headquarters, U.S. Naval Forces Europe, in London, England, as Human Intelligence Requirements Officer, and service as a counterintelligence officer and special agent with the U.S. Naval Investigative Service in Spain and Greece. Following separation from active duty and graduate school, Mr. Butler managed congressional affairs, public affairs and strategic planning for the U.S. Naval Criminal Investigative Service. He entered the Senior Executive Service and joined the U.S. Air Force Office of Special Investigations (AFOSI) in 2000, serving as AFOSI's Executive Director until joining ODNI in 2006.

A graduate of Columbia University in New York City (Economics), Mr. Butler also earned a Master of Public Administration degree at the Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University, and a Master of Science of Strategic Intelligence degree at the Joint Military Intelligence College (JMIC), Defense Intelligence Agency. He served as an Adjunct Professor at JMIC, teaching graduate courses in Counterintelligence and Ethics in Intelligence.
