Flight Following
The loneliness of the long-distance winter at South Pole Station is over. The first flights to the U.S. Antarctic Program's most remote station since mid-February arrived on Oct. 19.
Military Milestone
Airmen from the 62nd and 446th Airlift Wings, deployed from Joint Base Lewis-McChord , Washington, completed a milestone event when they flew the 500th C-17 Globemaster III Special Assignment Airlift Mission into Antarctica.
2012-2013 Research Season Begins
The 2012-2013 Antarctic research season began Monday, October 1st, 2012. A United States Air Force C-17 Globemaster and an Australian Airbus-319 transported cargo and 130 US Antarctic Program participants from Christchurch, New Zealand to McMurdo Station.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) has announced it will begin a five-year project to renovate housing at McMurdo Station as part of a larger improvement project intended to address the long-term needs of the U.S. Antarctic Program's largest research facility.
