Pollution Prevention
Pollution prevention (P2) is a term used to describe practices that avoid, eliminate, or reduce the amount of pollutants or waste being generated at the source. P2 activities reduce pollutants at the source by changing the waste generating process instead of handling the pollutants or waste after they are created. Fort Bragg strives to prevent pollution from all sources to the extent practicable through implementation of source reduction, reuse, and recycling initiatives. This policy extends to all environmental media including air, water, wastewater, hazardous materials, toxic substances, hazardous waste, and solid waste. By reducing the use of products and processes that degrade the environment, we also reduce unnecessary generation of waste, future operating costs, liability associated with environmental compliance and clean-up, and the disruption of mission operations due to regulatory compliance problems. The most favored option of pollution prevention is source reduction. If the source of pollution cannot be prevented or reduced, we investigate re-use or recycling opportunities. If the source of pollution cannot be re-used or recycled, we ensure the proper handling, disposal, or treatment of the pollution or waste. This process is called the waste management hierarchy.
Current goals of the Fort Bragg P2 Program include:
- Minimizing the use of toxic and hazardous materials and processes.
- Identifying and implementing P2 opportunities throughout Fort Bragg operations.
- Integrating P2 into all installation operational processes.
- Developing cost effective approaches to reduce energy use and to conserve natural resources.
- Encouraging all applicable organizations to participate in the Parts Washer Management Program, Hazardous Materials.
- Management Program, Green Procurement Program, and the Solid Waste Recycling Program.
- Develop and Implement Electronics and Wireless Recycling Programs.
- Maintaining compliance with environmental laws and regulations.
