DLA Energy responds to Sandy recovery operations in Northeast

Defense Logistics Agency Energy Americas is conducting post-Sandy assessment of facilities and supported customers in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast.

The Colonial Pipeline, DLA Energy’s main conduit for fuel transport along the East Coast, experienced no impact from the storm, according to a DLA Energy Plans and Operations briefing Oct. 31.

DLA Energy Americas was tasked to assist Foster Fuels, a Federal Emergency Management Administration contingency contractor, in supporting Defense Department fuel requests in the region. Foster is located in Brookneal, Va., and company personnel have set up in two locations nearer the most damage, and DLA Energy personnel are assisting.

 

At Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, N.J., DLA Energy Americas East quality assurance representative John Gaughan has been assigned as DLA Energy’s liaison officer.  As of Oct. 30, 40 trucks were on site.

 

At, Westover Air Reserve Base, Mass., DLA Energy Americas East quality assurance representative Lou Barbosa has been assigned as the DLA Energy LNO. As of Oct. 30 there were 18 trucks on site.

 

DLA Energy QARs are visually inspecting and confirming the number of Foster Fuels trucks present and are ready to support DoD fueling operations or FEMA when a request is ordered, DLA Energy Americas at Houston operations management specialist Jason Hill explained.

 

About 7,400 National Guard forces are mobilized in New York, Massachusetts, Virginia, New Jersey, Delaware, Connecticut and Maryland to help first responders and FEMA staffers support at evacuation shelters, damage assessments, route clearance, debris reduction and removal, search and rescue, and delivery of essential equipment and supplies, according to a release from the Office of the Secretary of Defense.

 

DLA doubled the amount of fuel it is ready to provide for emergency backup generators in anticipation of requests for assistance from FEMA and Department of Energy, according to the OSD release.

 

The Colonial Pipeline did shutdown their line to Linden Junction, N. J., used to move product to defense fuels support point Verona, Baltimore, Yorktown and Craney Island, Va.. Colonial mainlines of supply continue to operate normally. One jet fuel line from Newington, Va., supplying Ronald Reagan National Airport, was down due to power failure but had no mission impact. There is no operational impact due to delivery delays, according to the DLA Energy Plans and Operations briefing.
