The early childhood special education program is designed to prepare students to teach children from birth to age six who manifest disabilities or who are at risk of later school failure. Students endorsed in the area of early childhood special education will be eligible to teach in infant and preschool programs in both public and private settings. The program in special education: adapted curriculum K-12 (severe disabilities) is designed to prepare teachers to instruct individuals who are traditionally labeled with moderate, severe or profound disabilities and who may have disabiling conditions such as cerebral palsy, autism, or sensory impairments. In addition to teaching in the public schools, students endorsed in special education: adapted curriculum will be eligible for positions in public, private, and residential settings that serve individuals with moderate and severe disabilities. This master's degree program, with endorsement, can be completed in approximately two years.
Total Credits Required
1) 36 semester hours, including the practicum and student teaching; (2) two pre-requisite education courses -- Developmental Reading and Educational Application of Technology; (3) GPA of 3.00; (4) grade of B- or better in all course work; (5) the college writing proficiency examination - IF Praxis l has NOT been a requirement; (6) written comprehensive examination.Licensure requirements include: Praxis II -- 55th percentile and min. 143 in Content Knowledge Area - Code 0014S
Prerequisites
Education
(1) a baccalaureate degree; (2) undergraduate GPA of 2.80; (3) GRE score of 900 (min. Verbal score of 450; (4) 4.5 on the Analytical Writing section OR a Miller Analogies Test (MAT) score of 45; (5) a 400-500 word goal statement; and 6) Praxis I, Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) or the American College Testing exam (ACT).
