The Ph.D. in education with a concentration in early childhood education program, through its integral partnership with the Old Dominion University Child Study and Development Centers, focuses on the multidisciplinary study of the cognitive, language, and healthy social/emotional development of young children from birth to age 9. The program prepares students to become faculty in colleges and universities and senior administrators in institutions and agencies. Personalized mentorship and professional training are provided for those who desire careers in academic research, child advocacy, program design and evaluation, and higher education, including teacher preparation, policy and administrative leadership.
Total Credits Required
(1) a grade point average of 3.00 and a grade of B- or better in all course work; (2)written comprehensive examination; (3) an internship/student teaching experience; (4) Graduate Student Assessment; (5) Post Task Rating Form; and (6) professional portfolio; and (6) candidates seeking initial special education licensure will be required to take the Virginia Reading Assessment.

(1) Master's in an appropriate discipline from a regionally accredited university; (2) 3.5 GPA; (3) Min. 1000 overall total GRE , with a min. of 500 on both the verbal and quantitative sections, and a min. of 4.5 on the analytical writing portion; (4) 500 to 800-word statement of how the Ph.D. degree in ECE will contribute to achievement of their goals.
