This program is designed for students interested in employment as early childhood educators and is available to first-time college students as well as those already employed in the field who wish to improve their skills. The program leads to an A.A.S degree.The Distance Early Childhood Education program is a state-wide program offered jointly by the UAF/College of Rural and Community Development (CRCD) and the University of Alaska Southeast (UAS).

Prerequisites
Education
High School Diploma or GED. Students who have not completed freshmen composition and mathematics requirements will need to take English and math placement tests.

The program courses are generally offered via audio conference with some Web-based components. Students living in southeast Alaska will be advised by UAS faculty.
Credits earned from the Occupational Endorsement (O.E.) / Child Development Associate (CDA) and / or the Early Childhood Education Certificate (Paraprofessional) degrees may apply towards the AAS in ECE degree.
Notes
The AAS program at UAS has a strong focus on how culture affects, influences, and determines development. Our curriculum is generative. We believe that students should be producing at least half the materials they are using in their learning from activities with children and families. There is a very strong observation component in all the classes in the major.
