Pick 5: Enjoy the Outdoors Safely!
Hey Pick 5’ers, it’s time again for you to share what you’ve done and how you did it. If you haven’t done it yet, Pick 5 for the Environment and then come back to comment. Today we cover action #9: Enjoy the Outdoors Safely! Please share your stories as comments below.
After surviving the biggest snow storm of the season, I had a lot of snow to clear. I cleared three, count ‘em three decks, plus a set of steps in between two of them. After a lot of time in the sunshine getting to know my snow shovel, I decided to call it a day. I was amazed to find out that I had sunburn across my nose and cheeks. I’ve always been aware of the UV index level. During the summer months I’ve always used sunscreen, but never thought I would need it during the winter. Boy was I wrong. After doing a little research, I realized that using sunscreen is critical whenever the sunshine is strong, not just when it’s hot outside.
I’ve never been a fan of cold weather and have always stayed inside during the winter months, so I’ve never given much thought to protecting myself from the sun when it’s cold out . So make sure you enjoy the sunshine safely, regardless of the season.

How about each person trying to produce less garbage than last year? I collect aluminum seals from my yogurt tubs and I’m trying to find a place where they can be recycled.
I also stopped using plastic shopping bags, converting to canvas bags, of which I have a growing collection, each with a different logo. Does anyone else on this forum collect canvas or cotton shopping bags? How about naming the various imprints?

Post Script:
It’s impossible to enjoy the outdoors safely when the entire planet is being turned into a toxic dump. Of course, people must have their fantasies. . Mine is that people may wake up in time to recycle 100% of all their trash and waste and plan their families to reduce the human population and thus live in balance on a healing Earth.

I used to buy bottled water whenever I am out for hiking or excursions. But after knowing that bottled water is no better than tap water and the plastic waste it creates, I’ve since switched to using stainless steel water bottle to reduce waste and save money.
In fact, I’m so impressed with stainless steel bottles that I’ve put together a review of a small but respectable collection of them on my website for those who are interested to learn more:

Check them out and let me which do you like best in the comments. You can also find tips on how to take care of your stainless steel bottles on my website. Hope you like it!

I heard about giant king grass grown as bio fuel but also learned that it filters 20% of coal burning toxins by just growing in the vicinity. As the highest output of biofuel and the filtering charactieristics it would make sense to plant this grass around all of the coal plants where there is abunant land. do you think the government would promote this option?

We are lucky to live in Mission Viejo, a city ranked in the top 7 in the country for environmental stewardship in our recycling programs, parks, trails, open spaces, greenbelts. We have easily accessible standard recycling programs. Also battery recycling, medical sharps recycling, food waste recycling, electronic waste recycling. These are well used. Recycling efforts will continue to expand this year. And many people now do use reusable shopping bags instead of the throw away plastic ones. I use the reuseable bags. Best wishes, Michael E. Bailey.
