Office of the Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Director of the United States Patent and Trademark Office
The Office of the Under Secretary and Director (OUS)—under the guidance of the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Under Secretary and Deputy Under Secretary of Commerce—is the principal advisor to the President, the Secretary of Commerce, and the Administration on all intellectual property matters. The OUS oversees all offices within the USPTO, ensuring the agency achieves strategic and management goals, including quality, timeliness, cost-effectiveness, and transparency.

The OUS publishes a blog outlining issues of interest and concern to USPTO stakeholders, entrepreneurs, and the intellectual property community. There are frequent guest posts from the leadership of various business organizations across the USPTO.
Education
Educational outreach programming from the USPTO is managed through the Office of the Under Secretary. The USPTO provides educational activities and participates in educational programs for students, educators, and young inventors and innovators of all ages.
Department of Commerce - USPTO - Cornell University Partnership
An on-the-ground resource for intellectual property in New York City, the U.S. Department of Commerce, through the USPTO, is partnering with Cornell University to bring a full suite of resources to the New York City community, including the university community. The partnership was launched in October 2012. Sue Purvis is the first USPTO Innovation Outreach Coordinator for the Greater New York Region. She is working out of the Cornell Tech campus, connecting entrepreneurs, inventors, students, and faculty to the resources available within the Department of Commerce, including intellectual property education, export assistance tools, government grants, and government partners.
