School Nurse

Notes from the Nurse

Children are not allowed to remain in school if their temperature is 100 degrees or more.   Please keep your emergency contact information up to date in case your child becomes ill and we need to contact you.

For students currently enrolled, keeping your immunizations up to date is mandatory.

  • DoDEA, in alignment with the Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunity for Military Children, is committed to easing the challenges of military families moving between duty stations. For families transitioning to a new duty station and enrolling in DoDEA schools for the first time, there is now a provision, allowing a 30-calendar day grace period for parents/students to meet immunization requirements after school enrollment. The intent of this provision is to avoid any interruption in the transferring student’s education. The health and the welfare of all students is a top priority for DoDEA. The Department of Defense sets immunization requirements for DoDEA schools based on recommendations from the Center of Disease Control. Compliance with immunization requirements greatly reduces the risk of public health issues. School nurses and local military medical treatment facilities stand ready to assist parents in meeting these requirements promptly.

Please see the school nurse for any questions or concerns regarding the updates.  Thank you for efforts in ensuring the safety of each and every one of our children.

A part time Nurse performs the following health related services at our school.

  • Screening for visual, hearing, scoliosis, and other physical problems with appropriate referrals and follow-up.
  • Maintenance of appropriate current, and cumulative health records on each child’s health record.
  • Facilities, personnel and other provisions for first aid, rest, emergency care, and recuperation when minor injuries or illness occur.
  • Policies for the prevention and control of communicable disease (The Nurse must clear students after having a communicable disease before reentering school).

The school Nurse is not in a position to diagnosis your child’s health concerns, to prescribe medication, or to offer a prognosis.  Please allow your family’s primary care physician to make all decisions regarding the health of your child.

Medicine at School

Students with allergies - link here for more information

it's best that students not take medicine during school hours. However, when it is necessary for a student to take medication at school, he or she must leave the medication with the school nurse for safekeeping.

  • The medicine must be in a pharmacy-labeled container with the student's name, the name of the medication, and the scheduled dose or doses.
  • Each student must also bring a parent's written permission to take the medication and written orders from the physician.

If the school nurse is not present, the student must present the medication to the school principal, acting principal, or health aide for safekeeping. Only designated school personnel will administer medication. STUDENTS SHOULD NEVER KEEP ANY KIND OF MEDICATION, including over-the-counter remedies, ON THEIR PERSON OR IN THEIR CLASSROOM.

Automated External Defibrillator

We have two Automated External Defibrillator (AED) devices accessible to everyone.  Once the case is opened audible instructions are given for the use of the device.

Locations

1.  Wall mounted in a manufacturer provided cabinet.  Upon entering the school through the front entrance, the AED is to the right on the wall outside the clinic which is located next to the main office reception area.

2.  In the Orange POD on the right side as you enter the building near the water fountain.
