House Small Business Committee Chairman Sam Graves (R-MO) and Agriculture, Energy and Trade Subcommittee Chairman Scott Tipton (R-CO) today issued a joint statement in honor of the 39th annual observance of National Agriculture Day:

Chairman Graves said, “Today is set aside to not only salute our industrious agriculture community, but also to spread awareness of the vitality of agribusinesses to a strong economy and safe and plentiful food supply. As a sixth generation farmer myself, I know that it is important that we ensure our farmers and ranchers have the tools they need to produce an abundant and affordable food supply. As we look ahead to the farm bill reauthorization, it is crucial that we understand the issues facing these small businesses and put in place programs and policies that help them to thrive.”

Subcommittee Chairman Tipton said, “From the fields to the grocery stores, it’s truly a wonder to think of all of the hard work that goes into American agriculture. Because of the dedication of our farming and ranching community and supporting industries, Americans have access to some of the world’s most nutritious and delicious food options. Today we recognize the commitment of American agribusiness for putting food on our tables and providing valuable jobs and growth during challenging economic times.  It’s important that as we take up the next farm bill reauthorization we consider that the majority of agribusinesses in this country are small businesses, and ensure that they have access to the resources they need to continue to feed our growing nation.”

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, approximately 98 percent of the 2.2 million U.S. farms and ranches are considered family-owned, and of these, approximately 96.7 percent are defined by the Small Business Administration as small businesses. In 2007, small farms held nearly 64 percent of all farm assets.
