Adm. Papp discusses cutter topics at Surface Navy Association’s Symposium
Addressing a crowd, including both Coast Guard cuttermen and Navy surface warfare officers, the Commandant described how maritime countries have shown an increasing emphasis on a “maritime governance” approach using law enforcement authorities in contrast to the traditional Mahanian “control of the sea” approach to ensure safety, security and prosperity.
There is no short cut
The start of the spring semester began this week at the United States Coast Guard Academy, and Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Bob Papp traveled to the New London, Conn.-based institution to continue the tradition of delivering a leadership address to the corps of cadets.
Honoring BMCS Terrell Horne III
More than 1,000 people gathered at U.S. Coast Guard Base Los Angeles – Long Beach in San Pedro today to attend a memorial ceremony honoring Senior Chief Petty Officer Terrell Horne III, a Coast Guardsman who was killed in the line of duty Dec. 2, 2012, while carrying out law enforcement operations near Santa Cruz Island.

AMVER in action
Four sailors started the North American Rally to the Caribbean in the 46-foot sailboat Elle, but ended the race in Bermuda aboard a 387-foot container ship. The sailors were racing from Newport, Mass., to Bermuda in November 2011 when their sailboat lost steering 160 miles north of Bermuda. Rescue authorities in Bermuda received the distress call as the boat was tossed about in gale force winds.
Building the national security cutter: Keel laying
A keel is the very foundation of a ship. Running from bow to stern, a ship’s keel historically served as the core for the rest of the ship’s structure, providing a source of strength for the superstructure above. Today, the U.S. Coast Guard’s fourth national security cutter, named for Alexander Hamilton, symbolically received that source of strength.
A foundation of proficiency
Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Bob Papp, the Coast Guard’s 24th commandant, was the keynote speaker for the ceremony and offered insight, wisdom and knowledge to the recruits. He discussed the Coast Guard’s many missions and the challenging environment in which its people serve, as well as the Coast Guard’s foundation of proficiency.
In behalf of humanity
Another vessel has joined the ranks and earned the title “Coast Guard cutter.” However this isn’t just any cutter, it’s a fast response cutter. At 154-feet long, the ship has an impressive array of capabilities, including sustained speeds of more than 28 knots and an armament of a stabilized 25mm machine-gun mount and four, crew-served .50-caliber machine guns. But more impressive than its technology, more impressive than its features, is the cutter’s namesake – Richard Etheridge.
Not lost in translation
Relationships between the United States and countries in Central and South America are critical to the Coast Guard’s continuing efforts to intercept the flow of drugs in the Caribbean Sea and Pacific Ocean, key maritime transit zones leading to the U.S. border. For one Coast Guardsman, building a partnership between two nations became a reality.
