Senator Boxer Cosponsors Armenian Genocide Legislation

Tuesday, December 20, 2005

Recently, Senator John Ensign introduced Senate Resolution 320, regarding the Armenian Genocide.  I am proud to cosponsor this Resolution.

I have long called for our nation to fully acknowledge the Armenian Genocide.  This legislation specifically calls on the President to ensure that the foreign policy of the United States reflects appropriate understanding and sensitivity concerning issues related to human rights, ethnic cleansing, and genocide documented in the United States record relating to the Armenian Genocide and the consequences of the failure to realize a just resolution.  It also calls on the President to accurately characterize the systematic and deliberate annihilation of 1,500,000 Armenians as genocide.

The denial of the Armenian Genocide is a conscious effort to rewrite history, and cannot be allowed to stand.  The United States government must be a leader in the promotion of human rights. Senate Resolution 320 is an important step in assuring that we are on the right side of history, so that such acts do not occur in the future.

I am pleased to share this information with you and encourage you to contact me if you have any questions regarding this or any other matter.

Sincerely,

Barbara Boxer, US Senator, California
U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer
