FAA Creates Fuels Program Office to Facilitate General Aviation Transition to Unleaded Avgas
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has established the Fuels Program Office to help meet the agency's goal of making an unleaded fuel available for the general aviation (GA) fleet. The FAA is working with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and key stakeholders to replace 100 octane low-lead (100LL) fuel by 2018.
The FAA created the Fuels Program Office, headed by Peter White, based upon recommendations from the Unleaded Avgas Transition Aviation Rulemaking Committee (UAT ARC) report. Establishment of this office is a key step towards providing the infrastructure necessary to transition the U.S. fleet of GA aircraft to unleaded fuel. It will oversee implementation of the Unleaded Avgas Transition Action Plan, the consistent application of regulations and policy in fuels certification projects, and will centralize expertise for fuels certification programs. To ensure success, the FAA will continue to work with key stakeholders in the aircraft and engine industries, petroleum industries, government agencies and airports communities in finalizing the AvGas Transition Plan.
The FAA continues to collaborate with industry stakeholders and the EPA to ensure the continued availability of aviation gasoline for the GA fleet.
