About Us

Purpose

As part of the U.S. Department of Transportation, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) is the bus and truck safety agency. FMCSA issues, administers, and enforces the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSRs) and Commercial Regulations that apply to commercial motor vehicles transporting passengers. FMCSA sets minimum safety standards that motorcoach companies must follow for the buses/vehicles they operate and the physical qualifications and operating rules for their drivers.

FMCSA's Commercial Passenger Carrier Safety (PCS) Division within the agency's headquarters develops policies, plans, and guidance in matters related to commercial passenger safety. Division staff persons respond to stakeholder demands and strive to attain program goals to best ensure the safe transportation of passengers.

Mission

The mission of the PCS Division is to reduce highway fatalities while ensuring the safe and efficient transportation of passengers—specifically, by reducing the number of crashes, injuries, and fatalities involving commercial motor vehicles.

Strategy

The PCS Division implements educational strategies and messages aimed at all highway users to increase motor carrier compliance with FMCSA's safety regulations in order to reduce the likelihood of a commercial vehicle crash.
