Senator Boxer:  Celebrating our Women Veterans

Tuesday, March 23, 2010

Dear Friend:

I recently had the distinct honor of hosting and speaking at the Joint Services Observation of Women’s History Month on Capitol Hill.  It was such a moving experience for me to meet with this distinguished group of women representing all five branches of the military.

Women have served and continue to serve with distinction in every branch of our military.  From nurses to combat pilots, women have volunteered and sacrificed for our nation’s freedom and security in every major American military campaign since the Revolutionary War.  On many occasions, their contributions have gone without much-deserved recognition and acclaim.

That is why I was proud to author a Senate Resolution acknowledging and celebrating the history and continued accomplishments of women servicemembers and veterans.  I am pleased that this resolution passed the Senate on March 4, 2010 with the support of a bipartisan group of my colleagues.

At the Women’s History Month event, I presented a copy of my Senate Resolution to our guest of honor, Sergeant First Class Juanita Wilson, who accepted it on behalf of all women servicemembers.  As a wife, mother, Army Soldier, and Wounded Warrior, Sergeant Wilson is a true American hero and an inspiration to us all.

I applaud and deeply appreciate Sergeant First Class Juanita Wilson and all women who have served in uniform for the sacrifices that they and their families have made in service to our nation.

Photos from my recent speech are available here, and the full text of my resolution can be found here.  Please join me in continuing to honor these brave women, not only as we celebrate Women’s History Month but all year round.

Sincerely,

Barbara Boxer, US Senator, California
U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer
