Law enforcement agencies are using technology in all aspects of policing activities – from day-to-day operations to long term planning initiatives. Since 1994, the COPS Office has supported the use of technology to advance the community policing efforts of state, local, and tribal law enforcement agencies, awarding more than 4,400 agencies more than $2.2 billion in funding for crime-fighting technology. From supporting crime prevention and crime-solving strategies to improving information sharing capabilities, the use of technology continues to play a critical role in law enforcement operations and enhancing public safety.

The COPS Office has awarded funding for a variety of technology projects, including systems support and specific types of equipment, hardware, and software such as: computer aided dispatch (CAD) and records management systems (RMS), crime analysis, crime mapping, voice interoperability and data information sharing, call management systems (e.g., 311 systems; reverse-911), in-car cameras and closed-circuit televisions, electronic in-field reporting, mobile data computing and radio upgrades, justice data integration projects, and other technology initiatives that can benefit law enforcement and their communities.

To help ensure successful implementation of technology projects, the COPS Office has also funded guides and reports, training and technical assistance opportunities, and has provided links to other resources, on topics such as technology planning and procurement, information technology security and performance measures, and best practices in the use of specific technologies.
