Senator Boxer on Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month

Thursday, September 1, 2011

Dear Friend:

I recently co-sponsored a Senate Resolution in support of National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month this September 2011.  S.Res.242, which passed the Senate unanimously on July 29, aims to increase public awareness of this deadly disease, which is the fifth-leading cause of cancer death among American women.  To read the full text of this resolution, please click here.

Each year in the United States, about 21,000 women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer and 15,000 women die of the disease.  Because there is currently no reliable early detection test for ovarian cancer, 75 percent of ovarian cancer cases are detected at an advanced stage, when the cancer is harder to overcome.

Awareness of the symptoms of ovarian cancer by women and their healthcare providers can lead to quicker diagnoses and better outcomes. Recent studies have shown that certain symptoms such as bloating, pelvic or abdominal pain, urinary urgency or frequency, and difficulty eating or feeling full quickly are more likely to occur among women with even early-stage ovarian cancer than among women in the general population.

Barbara Boxer, US Senator, California
