USAID and State Push Mobile Info to New Moms Overseas

Some expectant and new mothers do not have access to nurses, doctors or even basic health information.

USAID and the Department of State hope that mobile technology will allow new and expectant mothers to receive important health information that can prevent illness and death. The “Mobile Alliance for Maternal Action” will pilot a program, which resembles Text4 Baby here in the U.S., in Bangladesh, India and South Africa before expanding around the globe.

Here are more details from the alliance’s website:

By using their mobile phones to register their due date or baby’s birth date, women can automatically receive SMS messages or voice recordings that are linked to their stage of pregnancy or baby’s growth.  For example, if a woman is 12 weeks pregnant, she could receive information on locally relevant foods that provide critical nutrition to her and her baby.  If her baby is 6 weeks old, a mother would receive information about vaccinations that the baby might need and a prompt to see her health care worker.
