Transfer Reactions

General Description

Stellar explosions such as novae and X-ray bursts are driven by thermonuclear reactions on unstable nuclei. Many of these reactions have never been measured directly in the laboratory -- usually because there is no available beam, the reaction yield is too low, or there are some other experimental difficulties such as an isobar contaminant in the beam. In such cases, it is often possible to measure a different reaction in the laboratory to learn enough about the original reaction to indirectly determine its rate. Such indirect techniques often focus on determining the energies and properties (partial and total widths) of resonances that may give dominant contributions to the total reaction rate. In fact, a combination of indirect approaches -- measuring scattering and transfer reactions, for example -- are often used as precursors to direct measurements made when appropriate beams become available. As shown in the figure to the right, transfer reactions "mimic" capture reactions by transferring a nucleon between the beam and the target, and producing the final state nucleus of the stellar reaction either as an intermediate or final state in the laboratory reaction.

Detailed Description

To mimic the proton capture reactions on unstable nuclei that are so important for novae and X-ray bursts, we often use the (d,n) reaction that transfers a proton from a deuterium nucleus in the (usually CD2 foil) target to a nucleus in the beam, leaving behind a neutron and heavy nucleus to detect. The VANDLE detector system is being constructed to measure neutrons from (d,n), and we have used charged particle Silicon strip detector arrays to measure the heavy product nuclei from these reactions. Other popular proton transfer reactions include (3He,d), (alpha,t), and (7Li,6He). To mimic the neutron captures on neutron-rich unstable nuclei that are so important in the synthesis of heavy nuclei in supernova, we often use the (d,p) reaction that transfers a neutron from a target deuterium nucleus onto a nucleus in the beam. The SuperORRUBA detector (in the photo to the right) was designed to measure the protons from such (d,p) reactions with high efficiency.

Technical Description

One recent example of a transfer reactions we have measured includes 18F(d,n)19Ne, to help determine the properties of very low energy 18F+p resonances that may dominate the 18F(p,alpha)15O reaction at nova temperatures. Other examples include a series of (d,p) reactions on 130Sn and 132Sn to mimic the neutron capture on these nuclei that are important in the rapid neutron capture process (r-process) in supernovae. References to these works, and many more, are given in the publication list below. Our future work will include measurements of the (d,p gamma) reaction at ANL ATLAS CARIBU facility where we will couple the ORRUBA silicon strip detector array to the GAMMASPHERE Ge gamma detection array at Argonne National Lab (see photo at right).
