Senator Boxer: Deterring Smartphone Thefts

Thursday, April 12, 2012

Dear Friend:

This week the Federal Communications Commission, the nation’s police chiefs, and the wireless industry announced new efforts to prevent thieves from stealing smartphones, a crime that has increased dramatically in recent years.  To read more, please click here.  To read my letter urging the wireless industry to take these steps, click here.

The major U.S. wireless providers will create a new national database of stolen cell phones that will help in disabling stolen smartphones and blocking them from being reactivated.  By reducing the financial incentive for thieves to steal these devices, we can prevent these crimes and better protect the safety of the American people.

Sincerely,

Barbara Boxer, US Senator, California
U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer
