Cohen: UTHSC to Receive $399K for Heart Research

WASHINGTON, D.C.-- Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN-9) today announced that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has awarded the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) a federal grant worth $399,162 for heart and vascular diseases research – specifically, to elucidate basic molecular mechanisms that lead to vascular disease in response to vascular injury and atherosclerosis.  The new federal funds will be administered by the National, Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI).

“UTHSC continues to provide the research needed to effectively combat heart and vascular diseases,” said Congressman Cohen.  “This new federal funding will help provide doctors, researchers and scientist at UTHSC with the tools they need to help study heart and vascular diseases and help save lives in Tennessee and across the country.”

As part of the Department of Health and Human Services, NHLBI’s mission is to provide “global leadership for a research, training, and education program to promote the prevention and treatment of heart, lung, and blood diseases and enhance the health of all individuals so that they can live longer and more fulfilling lives.”
