U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) made a total of 52 criminal arrests, resulting in 35 indictments and 38 convictions of child predators in Pennsylvania, Delaware and West Virginia in 2011. Full Story
ICE announced new measures to ensure that individuals being held by state or local law enforcement on immigration detainers are properly notified about their potential removal from the country and are made aware of their rights. The new measures include a new detainer form and the launch of a toll-free hotline — (855) 448-6903 — that detained individuals can call if they believe they may be U.S. citizens or victims of a crime. A federal grand jury indicted six foreign nationals on charges related to an Internet sales scheme that allegedly defrauded Americans who attempted to purchase automobiles and other vehicles online. After the purchase price was negotiated, the victims were instructed to wire the agreed-upon purchase price into bank accounts. Fraudulent invoices falsely represented that the funds would not be released to the purported sellers until the purchasers had received and approved the purchased vehicles. Full Story
A joint ICE HSI and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives investigation determined that Manuel Tijerina-Herrera was involved in the "straw purchasing" of 39 firearms, some with obliterated serial numbers. The firearms were being trafficked and used or possessed for other felony offenses. He was sentenced Thursday to 10 years in federal prison. Full Story
After hearing an ICE Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) special agent speak about gang enforcement efforts at a EUROPOL meeting, officers from France's Gendarmerie Nationale traveled to the United States to learn more. The officers shadowed ICE HSI special agents on an evening ride along with the Dallas Police Department's Gang Unit and learned new strategies to combat transnational gangs. Full Story
