Oct. 14, 2010 - 11 North Carolina counties to benefit from ICE strategy to use biometrics to identify and remove aliens convicted of a crime

Eleven counties in North Carolina have activated U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's (ICE) Secure Communities program. The program cross-references fingerprints of individuals in custody of local law enforcement against immigration databases maintained by the Department of Homeland Security. Across the nation, 685 communities participate in the program. Fifty-nine are in North Carolina. Full Story

Oct. 14, 2010 - Airline employees indicted on drug smuggling charges

Airline employees smuggled 5,000 kilograms of marijuana and 150 kilograms of cocaine into the U.S. between 2000 and 2009. Victor Bourne, a Barbadian national and baggage handler for American Airlines, led the smuggling operation. He and two other individuals were indicted in federal court this week. This investigation was led by ICE's Office of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI). Full Story

Oct. 13, 2010 - Mexican national sentenced to 2 1/2 years for illegally re-entering the US

After being deported twice, Reyes Venegas-Cruz was sentenced to 30 months in prison without the possibility of parole. He was previously deported after being convicted for felony drug possession. Re-entering the U.S. after being formally deported is punishable by up to 20 years in prison. Full Story

Oct. 12, 2010 - Former Washington man sentenced in mortgage fraud investigation

William S. Poff was sentenced to 11 years and three months in federal prison and ordered to pay more than $4 million in restitution for his role in a mortgage fraud scheme. ICE HSI agents discovered that he and five others cheated banks and property sellers out of more than $18 million. Full Story

Oct. 12, 2010 - 2 men in Delaware plead guilty to child pornography charges

In two separate cases, ICE HSI agents uncovered a combined total of more than 1,400 images and 370 videos of child pornography. The two perpetrators pled guilty in federal court this week. The investigations were part of Operation Predator, a nationwide initiative to identify, investigate and arrest those who sexually exploit children. Full Story
