NWS Newport/Morehead City to host Scout Day   02/08/2013
The Newport NWS is hosting a NWS Scout Day on April 20,2013. The event will begin at 9:30 am and end at 4:30 pm. All scouts are invited to attend this event which will provide an opportunity for Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts to learn about weather, and emergency preparedness while completing many of the requirements for weather, water and emergency preparedness related badges. Registration is required. Please follow the provided link to complete the registration process. Registration closes April 5, 2013.

An EF1 tornado touched down north of Beaufort on December 26, 2012, with maximum winds of 90 mph, path width of 100 yards, and length of one quarter mile.

At least 3 separate tornado touchdowns occurred in Jones County on September 18, 2012. A NWS survey determined that these touchdowns produced EF-0 damage along a 5-mile path near Trenton, NC.

The mean monthly temperature at New Bern was 61.1F, well above the previous warmest March of 58.6F in 1976. Hatteras had a mean temperature of 60.9F which beat the previous warmest March of 60.5F in 1921.

The scale keeps the same wind speed ranges as the original Saffir-Simpson Scale for each of the five hurricane categories, but no longer ties specific storm surge and flooding effects to each category.
