Goal 1: Goal 1: By June 2016, all students will improve their ability to evaluate, analyze and demonstrate understanding in expository writing. Improvements will be measured by Terra Nova 3rd Edition and school based reading/writing assessments.
Essence: Students will use expository writing to construct responses to open ended questions that require the use of higher level thinking skills as well as content knowledge.
Intervention: Students will use higher level thinking skills to construct written, expository responses to open ended, higher level questions across the curriculum.
Activities to implement the intervention:
- Teachers will teach and model higher level thinking skills needed to respond to higher level questions.
- Students will learn and apply the higher level thinking skills needed to respond to the higher level questions.
- Teachers will teach and model the use of a standard rubric for assessing expository writing across the curriculum.
- Teachers will integrate constructed response items on assessments in all curricular areas.
- Students will practice alone and with each other the use of constructed responses in answering higher level questions.
- Teachers will use quarterly assessments to determine if individual students have improved their ability to construct responses to open ended questions that require the use of higher level thinking skills as well as content knowledge.
- Teachers will maintain and use an assessment portfolio for each student to track student progress.
- Teachers will use the standard rubric to adjust or modify instruction to meet identified student needs.
- Teachers will provide descriptive feedback for each school-wide assessment.
Goal 2:By June 2016, all students will improve their mathematical problem solving and reasoning skills, as measured by Terra Nova 3rd Edition and school based math assessments.
Essence: At Faith Middle School Evaluating Meaning is reading to make connections between texts based on common themes and concepts; evaluate author purpose and effectiveness; and extend meaning to other contexts. At Faith Middle School Analyzing expository /informational text means reading with an understanding of the text that goes beyond surface meaning.
Intervention:
Revised: Students will improve their ability to evaluate the meaning of and analyze expository/informational text across the curriculum by using graphic organizers.
Activities to implement the intervention:
- Teachers will teach and model Cornell Notes in Year 09-10 in reading expository/informational text across the curriculum
- Students will learn and apply Cornell Notes in reading expository/informational text across the curriculum.
- Teachers will provide opportunities for students to use Cornell Notes in reading expository/informational text across the curriculum.
- Students will practice alone and with each other the use of Cornell Notes in reading expository/informational text across the curriculum.
- Teachers will use quarterly assessments to determine if individual students improve their ability to evaluate the meaning of and analyze expository/informational text across the curriculum by using graphic organizers. (Item Analysis)
