HADDAM NECK DECOMMISSIONING ACTIVITIES TO BE DISCUSSED AUG. 11

Key developments in the decommissioning of the Haddam Neck nuclear power plant will be discussed with Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff on Wednesday, August 11, in presentations by managers of the Haddam, Conn., facility.

Among the topics will be the turnover of site cleanup activities from plant operator Connecticut Yankee Atomic Power Company to a decommissioning contractor. Connecticut Yankee announced in April that it had signed a contract with Bechtel Power Corp. under which Bechtel will complete the remaining decommissioning work. The firm recently started to assume those duties under a transition plan.

In addition, there will be a discussion of plans for removal of the plant's four steam generators -- large components used to convert water into steam from heat produced in the reactor -- and demolition of the support building. Removal of the steam generators is expected soon, with subsequent shipment by barge later this year en route to the Barnwell low-level radioactive waste disposal facility in South Carolina.

The meeting is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. in the Energy Information Center at the plant, 362 Injun Hollow Road. The first portion of the meeting will be open for public observation only. Following a short break, the meeting will be opened for comments and questions from the public.

Haddam Neck was permanently shut down in December 1996. Plant officials project that the decontamination and removal of all structures and systems, with the exception of the spent fuel building, will be completed by the end of 2002.
