USIP held the second in a new series of meetings with Asia-Pacific naval attaches in Washington on January 25, providing a briefing on U.S. policy toward China. The broader initiative—Naval Attache Roundtable Meetings—aims to deepen exchanges on a region of vital strategic and economic importance toward which the U.S. government is “rebalancing” its foreign policy.

Afghan diplomats preparing to help steer their country’s foreign policy heard messages of support along with encouragement toward self-reliance during a stop at the U.S. Institute of Peace (USIP) on December 5. The session was aimed at briefing them on the array of USIP programs centered on their country as the United States turns over more responsibility to the government of Afghanistan.

In 2009, the Academy began a Training of Trainers (ToT) project to train Pakistanis in how to mediate and manage conflict non-violently. The Academy expanded the network into Sindh province in June 2011 with particular focus on Sindh’s capital, Karachi. USIP's Nina Sughrue reflects on her October 2012 workshop in Karachi.

As part of an effort to increase dialogue and prevent violence between ethnic and religious groups during Kenya’s 2013 general election, United States Institute of Peace has once again partnered with FLT Films, a UK-based non-profit organization, to make the story of Nigerians Imam Muhammad Ashafa and Pastor James Wuye more widely known among Kenyan communities. With USIP support,FLT Films is in the early stages of dubbing in Swahili and distributing An African Answer—the Kenya-focused sequel to FLT Films’widely acclaimed documentary The Imam and the Pastor. An African Answer chronicles the successful mediation efforts of Imam Ashafa and Pastor Wuye—former leaders of opposing militias in Nigeria —as they overcame their differences and worked together to reduce tensions in communities hardest hit by violence after the 2007 Kenyan general election.

The Institute’s Academy for International Conflict Management and Peacebuilding, in collaboration with Future Generations Graduate School, has begun teaching peacebuilding to international development practitioners in courses that have been conducted online as well as in India and Kenya. The new USIP role addresses an often unmet need: practical education in peacebuilding for people working in community development.
