DoDEA Professional Technical Studies Clusters & Pathways

The Professional Technical Studies program offers courses in many career field to students in DoDEA middle and high schools. The mission of this program is to prepare our students to be technologically literate and employable in a global workforce. Students taking Professional Technical Studies courses also must meet all DoDEA graduation requirements.

This program is divided into career clusters and career pathways. Career clusters represent major groupings of similar occupations and industries within the U.S. job market (e.g. business, information technology, manufacturing, health, human services.) Each cluster provides students with the “big picture” in terms of career options and an understanding of the broad industry.

Within each of the career clusters are various career pathways which represent a variety of occupational fields or jobs associated with the career cluster. It is important to note that DoDEA has adopted 11 of the U.S. Department of Education’s 16 nationally recognized career clusters and 22 associated pathways. Each DoDEA high school offers only those clusters and pathways that can be supported by the local school curriculum offerings.

Guam High School supports 5 of these clusters and 8 associated pathways:

Clusters Pathways
Arts, A/V Technology & Communications Audio & Video Technology & Film
Journalism & Broadcasting
Business, Management & Administration Administration & Information Support
Management
    Health Science Therapeutic Services
Information Technology Information Support & Services
    Interactive Media
Government & Public Administration National Security

What is exciting about Career Cluster and Pathways is that they will help students to focus on what they want to do with their lives after they graduate. By choosing a pathway of interest, students will be guided into appropriate courses to take, and they will begin to understand the importance of subjects like math, science and English in preparing them in the area of their career interest. Each pathway focuses students on the courses and experiences that will allow them to explore careers and prepare for two-year and four-year colleges, and the workplace. Students completing the 4 credits of study from the courses required and recommended for a specific pathway will earn a Pathway endorsement on their graduation transcript. Students should check with their school counselor for specific information on the clusters and pathways offered.

      Guam High School NJROTC Program

The Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) is a leadership program designed to give students a head start. NJROTC develops the self-discipline, self-confidence, and leadership skills to help you successfully meet life's challenges. People who are successful in life, who succeed in business, industry, and education have developed strong self-rounded character. The NJROTC curriculum and instructional activities are designed to develop your leadership ability regardless of your career path.

      Eligibility
If you are preparing to enter high school or currently in high school, a U.S. citizen or national, or alien lawfully admitted to the United States for permanent residence, and you are physically fit (must have a current Guam High sports physical on file), then you should consider joining this privileged team. Once part of the program, cadets must maintain acceptable standards of conduct; comply with personal grooming standards; and maintain acceptable standards of academic achievement.

      What's in it for me?
Enrollment in NJROTC does not require you to pursue a military obligation and is not tied to an accessions or recruiting program. It provides tools for success after high school regardless of a chosen career path. However, there are benefits available for students wishing to pursue a military avenue.

      What does ROTC teach?
The naval science curriculum includes subjects such as leadership, naval history, citizenship, astronomy, oceanography, meteorology, naval ships and aircraft, seamanship, radar and sonar electronics, navigation, and sea power. NJROTC is a 3- or 4-year program. It consists of a minimum of 180 class periods per year of formal classroom orientation visits and field trips to various naval facilities to enhance classroom studies. Guam High School offers an endorsement on their transcript in the pathway of National Security

      Administrative Participation Forms
Administrative Participation Forms: the following forms must be completed and signed by the Parent/Guardian and Cadet and returned by the Cadet before a Cadet can legally participate in any Guam High School Naval Science Activity.
