About the SRA

The Sequence Read Archive (SRA) was created and engineered at the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI, www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov), National Library of Medicine, National Institutes of Health, Department of Health and Human Services. NCBI is located on the National Institutes of Health campus in Bethesda MD, USA.

The SRA is formerly known as the "Short Read Archive", but in recognition of the long reads now delivered by next generation platforms, the name was changed to "Sequence Read Archive".

About Primary Data Archives at NCBI

The SRA is part of a cluster of sequencing data repositories called the "Trace Archives" (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/Traces), and is located under the "Primary Data Archives" at NCBI, which includes GenBank.

About the INSDC

The SRA is part of the International Nucleotide Sequence Database Collaboration (INSDC, www.insdc.org). The data model, data transfer protocols, and accession space are shared with the INSDC collaborators: European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI, http://www.ebi.ac.uk) and the DNA Data Bank of Japan (DDBJ, http://www.ddbj.nig.ac.jp).

The sister Sequence Read Archives are:

SRA Version

Current deployment version of SRA is 1.0, released Feb 4, 2009.

The original "provisional" SRA was deployed in August, 2007.
