Remote Systems at Spallation Neutron Source

The Remote Systems Group specializes in the development and application of advanced remote handling systems, tooling, process systems, and facilities for hazardous and inaccessible environments. The group has decades of experience that originated in, and builds upon, the Manhattan Project's production and processing of nuclear material.

Core capabilities of the Remote Systems Group include advanced manipulation systems, mobility and transport platforms, real-time control, remote sensor and metrology systems, ultrasonic inspection, human-machine interfaces, computer design, analysis and simulation, virtual prototyping, mockup testing and hot cell facility design. Activities range from fundamental research through full-scale prototyping, demonstration, and field deployment, with staff possessing particular expertise in executing high-radiation-environment operations. Group resources include a large cold-test facility for full-scale technology development and demonstration, as well as state-of-the-art software systems to design, model, and simulate engineering systems.

Current and past fields of application include nuclear fission, spent fuel processing and inspection, fusion energy, accelerator target systems, environmental restoration, space exploration, and military defense. Projects are presently under way for the Spallation Neutron Source, the Neutrino Factory and Muon Collider Collaboration, the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams, Fusion Energy, and a host of technology development tasks for various other sponsors.
