Mission and Functions

The Office of Security Policy develops and promulgates safeguards and security policy governing the protection of National Security and other critical assets entrusted to the Department and manages foreign national visits and assignments policy and Departmental determinations of foreign ownership, control, or influence.

Director's Perspective

Welcome to the Office of Security Policy

Jack Cowden, Director

The Office of Security Policy develops and promulgates safeguards and security (S&S) policy governing National Security functions and the protection of related critical assets entrusted to the Department. This includes the protection of DOE nuclear facilities, nuclear weapons components, special nuclear materials and classified information.

We develop security policy through an interactive process that involves all affected stakeholders, lessons-learned, policy panels and national requirements. Our broad functional areas that address various protection strategies are: Program Planning and Management, Protection Program Operations (which includes both physical security and protective forces), Information Security and Material Control and Accountability (MC&A).

The Office of Security Policy created a web page that features various Protective Force Supplemental Documents. This page communicates timely supplemental protective force related guidance documents and currently includes:

  • DOE Target Folder Format
  • Protective Force Qualification Courses
  • Firearms Modifications List
  • Range Design Criteria
  • Use of Bullet Traps and Steel Targets

We are very proud of our Departmental safeguards and security policy mission and value our contribution to this Department and to our national security efforts.

Thank you for your interest in our web page.
