Microcompression specimens, 10-15 µm in diameter by 20-30 µm in height, were produced from individual parent grains in a polycrystalline U-13 at.%Nb shape-memory alloy using the focused ion beam technique. The specimens were tested in a nanoindentation instrument with a flat diamond tip to investigate stress-strain behavior as a function of crystallographic orientation. The results are in qualitative agreement with a single-crystal accommodation strain (Bain strain) model of the shape-memory effect for this alloy.

An investigation of deformation twinning in coarse-grained alpha-uranium was conducted within the heat-affected zone of weld specimens tested in tension. Twins and twin interactions were studied both at fracture surfaces and sub-surface, using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). The fracture surface plane was identified using TEM of foils cut from the fracture surface using a focused ion beam. Intersecting twins found in these foils were also analyzed. EBSD was also used to analyze twins and twin interactions at and below the fracture surface. Fracture parallel to {172} twin planes and {172} twin crossings were observed, in agreement with previous optical/Laue diffraction studies. Previously unobserved crossings of {172} twins by {112} twins were also frequently observed. These twin interactions are interpreted in terms of previously established crystallographic criteria for twin crossings.

Detailed examinations of shape memory effect (SME) deformation structures in martensite of U-14 at.% Nb were performed with electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). An accommodation strain analysis, which has been previously used to predict SME deformation structures and texture evolution in polycrystalline material, was also performed. Martensite variants and twin relationships observed with EBSD after compressive or tensile deformation were determined to be consistent with those expected from calculated accommodation strains. Focused ion beam (FIB) was used to select twinned regions identified with EBSD for more detailed TEM analysis to verify the presence of these specific twins. The observed SME twinning systems in the martensite agree with previous TEM observations and the predicted {-176} twinning system was observed experimentally for the first time in U-14 at.% Nb using these complementary techniques.

Amy Clarke, Robert Field, Dan Thoma

Low temperature aging (<350C) of U-13 at.% Nb martensite results in increased strength levels accompanied by significant ductility loss. To determine the decomposition mechanism(s) responsible for these mechanical property changes, atom probe tomography was used to examine the niobium and impurity distributions after aging at 200 or 300C for times ranging from 2 h to 70 days. No patterns of niobium or impurity atoms were observed that would indicate segregation to the martensitic twin interfaces, making this hardening mechanism unlikely. Phase separation into roughly equiaxed regions of high and low niobium concentration was clearly observed after aging at 300C for 70 days. However, only subtle niobium concentration changes were observed after aging at 200C relative to the as-quenched condition, indicating that conventional phase separation is an unlikely explanation for the dramatic mechanical property changes at 200C. Therefore, consideration of aging mechanisms other than segregation and phase separation may be warranted.

At approximately 13 GPa, body-centered cubic alpha-iron undergoes a fully reversible, pressure-induced phase transition into hexagonal close-packed epsilon-iron.  Microstructural evidence of this phase transition has been identified in the fully reverted alpha-iron as a large number of {332}<113> twins found primarily as secondary twins within {112}<111> primary twin.  The {332}<113> twins were produced during high-pressure shock-loading of 1018 steel at a peak pressure above the alpha-epsilon phase transition pressure.  The twins were identified using electron backscattered diffraction and transmission electron microscopy.

Texture development and substructure evolution are described for pure beryllium given two-pass equal channel angular extrusion (ECAE) processing following routs A and C.  These routes impose different strain paths between the first and second passes-the former cross-shearing and the latter reversal.  Polycrystal calculations that are in good agreement with the texture measurements suggest that basal slip and, secondly, prismatic slip are operative in both passes of both routs.  Multi scale polycrystal modeling is shown to effectively predict texture evolution to strains of two caused by both ECAE processing routes.  Shear-like deformation textures observed in the second pass of route C are explained by differences in deformation characteristics between the first and second passes.
