South-Central Idaho Region
The South-Central Idaho Regional Office is located in Twin Falls, which is on the edge of the spectacular Snake River Canyon. The city was founded in 1905 as an agricultural center for those who homesteaded the irrigated lands of the Snake River Plain. The city was named for Twin Falls, which is located seven miles northeast of town. The area enjoys a moderate climate due to the high desert elevation of 3,729 feet and offers diverse attractions from recreation adventure to arts and antiques. Unique geological features accent the landscape. Twin Falls is home to Shoshone Falls, also known as The Niagara of the West, which cascades 212 feet to the river below. These falls are best viewed in the early spring before water is diverted for irrigation purposes. Other unusual features around Twin Falls include Rock Creek Canyon, Balanced Rock and Malad Gorge.
The Perrine Memorial Bridge marks the north entrance to the city. At 1,500 feet in length, it is the longest span bridge in the United States. The original bridge was opened in 1927 and operated as a toll bridge. Today the Perrine Bridge is a popular destination for BASE (Building, Antennae, Span, Earth) jumping.
Close scenic attractions include the world-renowned Sun Valley resort area, which is a couple of hours north, and Jackpot, Nevada to the south (a 40-minute drive). Strong employment growth and increasing industry have made Twin Falls a place of economic vitality with a prosperous future. With a county population of 65,472, visitors will love the convenience and culture of a city mixed with rural charm.
