Since 1992, USAID has emphasized projects in Georgia that strengthen democracy and governance, stimulate economic growth, improve education and health, help protect natural resources, and provide humanitarian relief during times of crisis. Such assistance has helped renovate schools, train nurses, increase the income of small farmers, and improve the delivery of basic services such as electricity.
USAID currently implements 48 projects that support Georgia’s transition to a free and prosperous democracy. These include initiatives to:
- Increase citizens’ involvement in shaping Georgia’s future.
- Strengthen the rule of law and independent media.
- Improve the business environment and expand opportunities for the private sector.
- Promote tolerance among ethnic groups and among all citizens.
- Strengthen health-care systems to provide better quality health services for all Georgians.
- Enhance energy security and infrastructure necessary for economic growth.
Building on over 20 years of successful partnership with Georgia, the U.S. Government will dedicate its resources to new and continuing USAID programs over the next five years to achieve the goal, Georgia’s democratic, free-market, Western orientation enhanced. Development objectives include:
