Many children and adults in Indian country spend a significant portion of their days in public and private school buildings. Many of these buildings are old and in poor condition, and may contain environmental conditions that can inhibit learning and pose increased risks to the health of children and staff. These issues include asbestos, chemical use and management, drinking water, pesticides, PCBs, lead-based paint, and more.

The Tribal Schools Compliance Assistance Notebook provides quick access to the many programs and resources available to help prevent and resolve environmental issues in schools. EPA Region 10 has compiled these materials to assist Tribal school districts and Tribal schools in complying with Federal laws and regulations and maintaining school facilities that are safe and healthy for students and staff. The materials were compiled into a Tribal Schools Compliance Assistance Notebook as part of EPA’s National Tribal Compliance Assurance Priority. Please let us know if these materials were helpful to you and if there are other topics you would like to see covered. Please contact Don Dossett (206) 553-1783 if you have any questions.
