Youth Preparedness Resources
Hi Community Members,
One top priority on FEMA Individual & Community Preparedness Division's list is Youth Preparedness. We have plenty of resources here for kids on the Ready site, but i'm sure there are more youth preparedness resources in this region to aid other community members in their youth preparedness engagement.
What other existing resources do you have to share with the community team to engage youths in preparedness? Share your program, games, pictures, activites, and any guiding documents or templates that others can utitlize.
To name one, the State of Illinois has a very interactive earthquake preparedness game designed for youths. It takes you on a special mission to get prepared. Visit the game link here: http://iema.illinois.gov/disaster/eQuakeMain.htm. Please share this with your network, website, blogs, newsletter, etc.
Thank you!
Angela
This WebQuest activity is for teen youth. It was developed for use in a high school life skills class
"Are you Prepared if Disaster Strikes?"
In this real world problem solving WebQuest students discover what it takes to prepare for disaster and formulate an emergency plan. They produce a public awareness brochure to inform their families and neighbors of their findings. http://drb.lifestreamcenter.net/Lessons/emergency/
Hi Carolyn!
That link is great! I'm working extremely hard to motivate key players in my community to get preparedness information incorporated into our living skills class in our school district, as well as neighboring ones.
Currently, I'm in the process of creating the curriculum, with a special emphasis on earthquake preparedness, but including all types of disaster preparedness, as well. I'm creating a one-pager, as well as a powerpoint which teachers will easily be able to incorporate into the current curriculum.
If you have any similar sites or information that could help me in this process, that would be great!
Thanks much,
Divya
Hello community members,
FEMA Region IX Youth Members are doing an excellent job in spreading the preparedness message. One of the members, Divya Saini has already written two columns that was published in her very own city, Palo Alto, CA Weekly online news. Enjoy the read and forward the links over to your networks and share this with youths in your community.

If there are any youth programs or stellar youths that would like to share their preparedness efforts, please have them join this forum. Community members are always looking for ideas, resources, tips, and would love to learn more about what's happening in the region because it may be happening right in their backyard and they may have never known.
Also, you can learn more about the first ever FEMA Youth Council and obtain Youth Preparedness information here: http://www.citizencorps.gov/getstarted/youth/youthindex.shtm

Thanks, Angela!
We'd also like to call all teens to "like": http://www.facebook.com/FemaRegion9Youth
If your teen is on Facebook, this is a great, easy way for them to take a first step in becoming aware about preparedness. It's a fun page, and will be used to spread information about preparedness events and Fema-related information for Region 9 teens. We'll post LOTS of opportunities for teens to get involved in!
Community members,
American College of Emergency Physicians Announce the Release of Disaster Hero Game to help families prepare for catastrophic disasters.
The "Disaster Hero" game is designed to teach families how to prepare for all types of hazards or emergencies. To play the game, click on this link: www.disasterhero.com. I played only one mission and did find the game to be interactive, filled with a little humor, fun, and nice armor wear for whichever Disaster Hero you choose. Your thoughts on this game would be much appreciated on the board after you go on your Disaster Hero mission to be prepared.
