ANNOTATION: The use of active radio-frequency identification (RFID) to strengthen a correctional agency’s operations and safety is investigated. Four chapters are contained in this report: introduction; expectations for the use of an active RFID system; case study of the early implementation of active RFID in one facility; and summary and conclusions. While RFID appears to be promising in regards to ensuring safety in a correctional setting, “as with any new technology, there are factors that need to be considered in making the decision whether to invest in an RFID system and how it will fit into the overall processes and procedures of an institution” (p.30).
