Flood Control Works

Public Law 84-99 gives discretionary authority to the Corps of Engineers by Congress to act and react to emergencies caused by floods, contaminated water sources, drought, or dam failures. This authority allows the Corps to repair and/or rehabilitate any qualified flood control project (Levee) whether it is federally constructed or privately owned. Local, state, or tribal governments often have the primary responsibility for operating and maintaining flood control works including operation and maintenance of levees, floodwalls and other flood control structures.

Those responsible should plan and prepare for high water, and understand the steps to take during emergencies to help reduce flood damage and promoting public awareness of local flood risks and issues.
