ESA Listing of Alaska Cold-Water Corals Not Warranted

  • NOAA Fisheries has concluded that a petition to list 44 species of cold water corals off Alaska as threatened or endangered does not present substantial information that listing under the Endangered Species Act may be warranted. The agency will not conduct a formal status review of the species. More>

Jeep Rice and Chris Wilson Receive Distinguished Career Awards

  • AFSC scientists Jeep Rice and Chris Wilson were awarded NOAA's 2013 Distinguished Career Award: Jeep Rice for his pioneering work in the long-term effects of petroleum hydrocarbons on marine ecosystems; Chris Wilson for 27 years of innovation and research advancements in conducting fisheries abundance assessments in the Bering Sea and Gulf of Alaska. The Distiguished Career Award recognizes long-term achievement in advancing the goals and mission of NOAA Fisheries.

More than 500 Years of Federal Service!

Pink Salmon Harvest Forecast for Southeast Alaska Predicting Big for 2013!

  • The AFSC Southeast Alaska Coastal Monitoring project forecasts a pink salmon harvest for 2013 of 54 million fish. If this SECM forecast materializes, and high pink salmon prices are sustained, the harvest value of this sustained resource could approach a record $100 M value (ex-vessel) to the stakeholders of Southeast Alaska in 2013.
