Center of Excellence for Collaborative Innovation

    NASA is excited to announce the formation of the Center of Excellence for Collaborative Innovation (CoECI). The CoECI is being launched to enable acceleration of US Government implementation of new models of problem solving using collaborative innovation methodologies such as crowd sourcing and open innovation to meet agency requirements.

    The CoECI is a NASA-led virtual COE that will advance the use of open and distributed innovation models to improve government missions.

    The CoECI will serve as a convening body which will harness and redistribute the collective experience of all participating federal agencies regarding best practices in collaborative and distributed innovation.The three primary functions of the CoECI are:

    1. Education and Best Practices Sharing
    2. Implementation Guidance
    3. Measurement of Impact

    The goals of the CoECI include:

    • The creation of a translational Community of Practice
    • The creation of a collaborative environment for cross Agency experimentation in collaborative innovation
    • Models for implementation guidance in collaborative innovation
    • The creation of a repository of best practices and applications of collaborative innovation methodologies

    Innovation is an inherently social activity; the best ideas emerge when the questions that need to be asked are effectively identified and can be asked to a broad and diverse audience. The US government has been investigating the effectiveness of new business models, tools and strategies that support collaborative innovation including:

    • X Prizes
    • Open Government Initiatives
    • Crowdsourcing
    • Consortium Based Methodologies
    The CoECI seeks to harness and redistribute the collective experience of all the US Government best practices in collaborative innovation to create substantial change.
