Hours

The Consulate is open Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., except American and Canadian holidays.

Non-emergency services (passports, reports of birth, notarials, Social Security, etc.) are handled by appointment only.

Visa services are provided at the following times only: Tuesday and Thursday from 8:30AM to 11:00AM. Visa services are not provided at any other times.

Schedule An Appointment

Please note that, effective October 3, 2011, anyone requesting non-emergency services from the American Citizen Services (ACS) Unit must have first scheduled an appointment via an online appointment system on the Consulate's website. Non-emergency services include passport renewals (and passport extra pages), birth registrations, notarial services, Federal benefits (e.g. Social Security), and other general inquiries. After October 3, only individuals with appointments will be admitted to the Consulate General for all non-emergency matters.

As the ACS Unit makes the transition to the new online appointment system, please keep in mind the following dates:

  • September 1: The ACS Unit begins accepting online appointments.
  • September 30: The last date the ACS Unit will accept non-emergency walk-ins.
  • October 3: Only individuals with online appointments will be admitted to the Consulate General for non-emergency matters.

We thank you for your patience as we make this improvement to our operations to better serve you.

Visa Services

All appointment services for non-immigrant visas -- tourist, student, work, temporary workers, exchange, etc. -- are provided at no additional charge. Information on fees is available from our Consular Services section. Visa appointments are scheduled through the U.S. Visa Service. Visa applications are accepted by appointment only.

Visa services are provided at the following times only: Tuesday and Thursday from 8:30AM to 11:00AM. Visa services are not provided at any other times.

All visa applicants must obtain an appointment for a visa interview. Use the link above for information. You cannot schedule your visa interview by calling the Consulate directly.

For current visa processing wait times, please consult the State Department's Bureau of Consular Affairs.

Security Notice

All visitors to U.S. Consulate Halifax must follow certain security procedures. Any visitor who declines to be screened by U.S. Embassy/Consulate security personnel will be prohibited from entering the Embassy/Consulate.

Consular-Related Visitors

The following persons may accompany a visa applicant during Consular-related visits:

  • Interpreter: Applicants may bring one interpreter if they do not speak English well enough to participate in an interview. Note: The working language of the U.S. government is English. The applicant is responsible for providing a translator for any language other than English, even if that language is an official language of Canada, i.e. French.
  • Special Needs Visitors: Applicants may bring one person to help if they are elderly, disabled, or if the applicant is a minor child applying for a visa.
  • Attorney: Attorneys will not be permitted to accompany clients into the waiting room or at their interviews.

Due to waiting room size, the large volume of applicants and the time required to screen consular clients, other accompanying persons cannot be admitted to the waiting room. Drivers, friends, and extra relatives must wait outside or return to meet the applicant after the interview has been completed - with the exception of applicants with children.
