Carlsbad Field Office

The U.S. Department of Energy Carlsbad Field Office has responsibility for the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant and the NationalTransuranic (TRU) Program. The office's mission is to provide safe, compliant, and efficient characterization, transportation, and disposal of defense-related TRU waste. Its vision is to enable a nuclear future for our country by providing safe and environmentally responsible waste management.

The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant, or WIPP, safely disposes of the nation's defense-related transuranic radioactive waste.

Located in the Chihuahuan Desert, outside Carlsbad, N.M., WIPP began disposal operations in March 1999.

WIPP is a U.S. Department of Energy facility and is managed by Nuclear Waste Partnership LLC.

Modification seeks efficiency, added safety in waste characterization process

On December 12, 2012, the U.S. Department of Energy and Nuclear Waste Partnership LLC, referred to as the Permitees, submitted a Class 2 Permit Modification Request for the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant Hazardous Waste Facility Permit to the New Mexico Environment Department. The request proposes
to revise the methods used so transuranic
waste characterization is accomplished using
acceptable knowledge and radiography
and/or visual examination.

Visitors to Carlsbad, N.M. are encouraged to visit the WIPP Experience Exhibit. While public tours of WIPP are not available, the exhibit at our in-town office building features a brief documentary on the project and numerous displays. Friendly staff are available to answer questions about this one-of-a-kind facility.

Free 250-million-year-old rock salt samples are available for all visitors! Groups larger than four people are asked to call in advance for special showings in the auditorium.

WIPP Environmental Initiatives Earn DOE Recognition
The U.S. Department of Energy recently recognized four initiatives at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant and more than 20 people for improvements in energy, water and fleet efficiency while reducing pollution and waste across the DOE complex.
